The Procedure Of Getting Dental Crowns
To get a dental crown for your tooth, you will ideally need to visit us twice. On the first visit, we will extensively inspect the tooth which is receiving the crown, as well as its surrounding area. We may also take x-rays as well to observe the bone structure of your mouth. If we find a lot of decay or any risk of infection and injury to the tooth’s pulp, then we may perform a root canal treatment first.
After that, the tooth receiving the crown will be reshaped so that the crown fits properly. At the first visit, we will decide the material and color for the crown. We will be sure to consider your preferences during this stage. We will also provide a temporary crown for your tooth, which is generally made with acrylic, and is placed with temporary cement.
On the second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and cement the new crown in place. This cementing may or may not be permanent, as we might ask for a third visit after a couple of weeks to check the position and fit. If everything is right, then we will permanently cement it on the tooth. This procedure may not be the same for every individual, but this is usually how the procedure takes place.
How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?
A dental crown will usually last for five to fifteen years. For the longevity of dental crowns, proper oral hygiene, care, and regular check-ups are a must.
