Dental Crown

Fort Worth, TX

A dental crown is a cover or cap for a tooth that looks the same as a natural tooth. The purpose of dental crowns is to cover and hide the original tooth. This serves as a protective and attractive restoration to help return a tooth to its natural shape, size, and appearance. Materials used to make dental crowns vary from stainless steel, metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal to all-resin, and all-ceramic or all-porcelain. Usually, we here at HomeTown Dental, Fort Worth (Sycamore) try to color the crown so that it blends in with the rest of the teeth (unless you have your preferences or if you have any specific medical condition that does not allow for a particular material or color).

Why Do I Need A Dental Crown?

There are multiple reasons for having a dental crown. The most common instance when we recommend having a dental crown is when someone wants to hide a dental implant or hide a discolored or damaged tooth. Sometimes, dental crowns are also necessary for serving as an anchor for dental bridges, as well.

Dental crowns are largely used to restore teeth that are decayed, worn down, weak, or when a part of it has become cracked. We also use crowns in cases of an already broken tooth or a seriously worn-down tooth. Lastly, they are used as support and cover for a tooth when a dental cavity is too large for a regular filling.

The Procedure Of Getting Dental Crowns

To get a dental crown for your tooth, you will ideally need to visit us twice. On the first visit, we will extensively inspect the tooth which is receiving the crown, as well as its surrounding area. We may also take x-rays as well to observe the bone structure of your mouth. If we find a lot of decay or any risk of infection and injury to the tooth’s pulp, then we may perform a root canal treatment first.

After that, the tooth receiving the crown will be reshaped so that the crown fits properly. At the first visit, we will decide the material and color for the crown. We will be sure to consider your preferences during this stage. We will also provide a temporary crown for your tooth, which is generally made with acrylic, and is placed with temporary cement.

On the second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and cement the new crown in place. This cementing may or may not be permanent, as we might ask for a third visit after a couple of weeks to check the position and fit. If everything is right, then we will permanently cement it on the tooth. This procedure may not be the same for every individual, but this is usually how the procedure takes place.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

A dental crown will usually last for five to fifteen years. For the longevity of dental crowns, proper oral hygiene, care, and regular check-ups are a must. Overall, if your oral health is great, then your dental crown will last longer.
