What Is Bonding?

To bond, according to Webster’s New World Dictionary, means to connect or fasten, or to bind. Dental bonding, which is also known as tooth bonding, is the use of a type of soft composite resin to fix minor chips and cracks on a tooth. The composite has the same color as a natural tooth. It is molded into the shape needed and polished to the closely resemble the surrounding teeth.

What Is Tooth Bonding Used For?

Tooth bonding is used for cosmetic dentistry. It is used to fix chips and cracks on teeth. It is also used to correct discolorations. It helps to improve your smile, as it provides adjustments for uneven teeth. When there are gaps and spaces between teeth, bonding can be employed to fill those gaps. Bonding is also a foundation for other dental procedures that requires fixed appliances.

How Does Tooth Bonding Work?

The process of a bonding is very easy and can be completed in a single appointment. Our professionals assess your teeth to see if bonding is ideal for you. Then, we use a shade guide to help select a composite resin that would match the color of your natural teeth. Then we gently roughen the surface of the tooth, priming it with a liquid that will hold the bonding agent in place. Next, we would apply the resin on the liquid and work to mold and shape it to desire. Finally, an ultraviolet light is used to quickly harden the composite resin in place. It is a painless and fast procedure, so anesthesia is not needed.

What Are The Downsides To Bonding?

Teeth bonding is a simple and inexpensive procedure with very little side effects. Patients should understand that composite resin is not as sturdy as their natural teeth, so durability is relative. Getting teeth bonding would mean that you have to keep your teeth away from really tough food. You should not bite down on hard stuff such as ice, candy, your fingernails, or a pen or pencils.

Composite resin is also not resistant to staining, so discoloration may occur if you a lot coffee or tea (or soft drinks). Also, we often recommend that teeth whitening be done before choosing a resin shade. Once the resin is bonded, you cannot whiten your teeth any further.

Caring For Your Dental Bonding

The longevity of your bonding is dependent on the amount of bonding fixed and your general oral hygiene. You are expected to keep up a great oral hygiene regimen. You should care for your bonding as much as you do your natural teeth. In the first 48 hours following the procedure, you must deliberately avoid coffee, tea, tobacco or any food that threatens to discolor your teeth. You would also need to keep up regular dental cleanings for best results. Please contact us at HomeTown Dental, Fort Worth (Sycamore) at (817) 224-2251 today to learn if bonding is a solution for you.
