If you have recently noticed that your teeth are not as bright as they used to be, please do not worry. You are not alone. In fact, teeth discoloration is a fairly common concern for most adults. As we age, multiple factors – such as the consumption of tea, coffee, red wine, smoking, and the use of certain medicines – contribute to the deterioration of the inner layer of our teeth. This portion of our tooth (known as the dentin), becomes visible, which results in an overall yellower or darker tooth. Even our genetics may be responsible for the natural color of our teeth. Here at HomeTown Dental, Fort Worth (Sycamore), we understand the value of your smile and can help you recover the radiant, white teeth you deserve.

Is It Possible To Whiten My Teeth?

Teeth whitening is but one of the most popular and simpler practices of cosmetic dentistry. Although the whitening does not work on crowns or veneers, if your teeth are healthy enough and are not affected by extreme decay, trauma or cavities, you are very likely to be a candidate for the procedure. Since every patient has different necessities, a prior consultation will be required so we can analyze your case and determine the most effective approach. It is also strongly recommended to have a complete dental cleaning first. This can help ensure that you have not only a beautiful smile, but a healthy one as well.

How Is The Whitening Done?

There are several ways of brightening your teeth. The process often involves the use of a whitening agent (which is generally hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) in form of a gel. This is applied to the tooth via a custom-made tray, made out of an impression of your teeth, so it fits securely against them. These chemicals can irritate your gums, so we will take special care during the procedure to help avoid any chances of contact. A reduced concentration of the whitening agent may be used in patients with sensitive teeth, which can help prevent any discomfort.

As the gel touches your teeth, the whitening agent will penetrate the enamel layer to reach the dentin. Both hydrogen and carbamide peroxide will release oxygen, which will then break down the areas of discolored pigment on your teeth. The process may take up to an hour, but afterward, your teeth will brighten up to eight shades.

What Should I Expect Afterward?

Depending on their current color and the level of whitening agent concentration applied, it could take longer for your teeth to whiten. If you did not reach your desired shade, another visit may be necessary to meet your cosmetical goals. Your teeth will maintain their new vibrant color for up to three years, although proper and constant dental care and oral hygiene will be necessary to maintain it for longer.

Apart from a mild teeth sensitivity during the first days after the whitening, the procedure itself is fairly straightforward and does not lead to unexpected side effects. We provide a solution to discolored teeth that is proven to be safer and more effective than the other popular over-the-counter whitening products.
