Dental exams are a standard check-up of your teeth and gums for the well-being of your oral health. Unfortunately, many people often overlook scheduling these appointments. However, according to the American Dental Association (ADA), most children and adults should get a dental exam at least once every six months. Regular dental exams help prevent issues like tooth decay and gum disease. Some of these oral diseases are very serious, and identifying them ahead of time makes it easier to treat. If you want to take good care of your oral health, then we here at HomeTown Dental, Fort Worth (Sycamore) are pleased to provide thorough dental exams to help prevent any threat to your oral health.

What Goes Into A Dental Exam?

During your appointment, we will ask your questions regarding your oral health to find out about any discomfort or problem you may have in your mouth. We may also ask about your physical health and medications and advise you about any potential complications which can arise. This is a crucial part of the dental exam, especially if you already have an existing problem.

After this interview, will then do a total check-up of your mouth, including your teeth, gums, lips, and tongue. This is to check for any signs of cavities and gum disease. We may also provide instructions or tips that you must follow in order to protect your oral health.

The next part of the dental exam is a cleaning. This part is crucial, as it helps in removing plaque and tartar from your teeth. Plaque is a sticky substance that has bacteria in it, and it coats the teeth in a layer of film. If it is not removed, it then turns into tartar, which is a hard mineral-like substance found in the bottom of the teeth. We will then floss your teeth for you. Cleaning your teeth regularly helps in maintaining a bright, beautiful, and healthy smile.

Lastly, we may do an x-ray of your mouth, if we believe it is necessary. There are different types of x-rays available, and depending on what we decide, you may have to go through one or more rounds of x-rays. It helps us in identifying any serious oral health diseases before it is too late.

Who Should Have A Dental Exam?

According to the recommendations of the ADA, everyone should have regular dental exams. This is especially true if you feel any discomfort or if you see any signs of infection in your teeth, gums, or anywhere in your mouth. Not only should adults have their teeth checked regularly, so should children. Senior citizens and patients without their own natural teeth should also have regular dental check-ups, as we are not only checking for tooth decay during your appointment.

How Frequently Should You Have Dental Exams?

In general, you should visit us once every six months for dental exams, unless we advise you otherwise. If we find any infection or gum disease, we might recommend you come in for a dental exam more frequently. In some cases, people must visit us four to five times a year.
